Caring for Your Skin Through Winter

The cooler months on the Northern Beaches are beautiful — but they ask a lot of your skin. Here's how to keep it comfortable, hydrated and glowing until spring.

If your skin has felt tight, dull or a little thirsty lately, you're in good company. At Facial Impressions we see it every day through winter: skin that drinks in every drop of moisture we give it. It isn't your imagination, and it isn't anything you've done wrong — it's simply the season.

The good news is that a few small changes make a real difference. Here's what we recommend to our clients to carry their skin comfortably through to spring.

Why winter is harder on your skin

Cold air holds less moisture, so the environment itself draws water from your skin. Add the drying effect of indoor heating, hot showers and coastal wind, and the skin's natural barrier — the layer that keeps moisture in and irritants out — comes under real pressure. When that barrier is compromised, skin loses hydration faster than it can replace it, which is why it can feel tight, look flat, and become more sensitive than usual.

Winter skin isn't just "dry." It's often dehydrated and under-nourished at the same time — and the two need slightly different care.

Six ways to care for winter skin

1. Swap to a richer moisturiser. The light gel-cream that felt perfect in summer often isn't enough now. A richer, more nourishing moisturiser helps seal hydration in and reinforce the barrier against the cold. Look for one that leaves skin comfortable well into the afternoon, not tight an hour later.

2. Add hydration, not just moisture. Moisturiser locks water in — but you also need to put water there in the first place. A hydrating serum layered underneath your cream (think hyaluronic acid or similar humectants) makes a noticeable difference to plumpness and glow. Apply it to slightly damp skin for the best result.

3. Turn the shower temperature down. Long, hot showers feel wonderful in winter, but they strip the skin's natural oils. Warm rather than hot, and a little quicker, keeps your barrier intact — and moisturise while skin is still slightly damp to trap that hydration.

4. Don't abandon your SPF. It's the mistake we see most in winter. UV is lower now, which is exactly why it's the season for corrective treatments — but it hasn't disappeared, and daily SPF remains your single best defence against premature ageing and pigmentation. Keep it in your morning routine year-round.

5. Exfoliate — gently, and with purpose. A build-up of dead surface cells makes winter skin look dull and stops your serums absorbing properly. Gentle, exfoliation restores radiance and helps everything else in your routine work harder. The key word is gentle — over-doing it damages the barrier you're trying to protect.

6. Nourish from the treatment room. This is where a professional facial earns its place. A treatment can deliver deeper hydration, active nourishment and barrier repair that home care simply can't match — and winter, with its low UV, is the ideal time for it.

A seasonal ritual made for right now

This is exactly the thinking behind our current Sothys Autumn–Winter Seasonal Facial — a limited-edition treatment built around a comforting sensory combination of caraway and fig, designed to oxygenate, remineralise and nourish skin left cold-weary by winter. It's warm, restorative and deeply indulgent — everything winter skin is asking for, in 45 minutes.

Like the season itself, it won't be here for long. We have limited facials remaining before it sells out for the year.

Not sure where to start?

If your skin has changed with the season and you're not certain what it needs, book an advanced skin analysis with Kim, Emily or Jayda. We'll look at exactly what's happening beneath the surface — dehydration, sensitivity, pigmentation — and recommend the plan that's genuinely right for you. No guesswork, just a clear path to comfortable, glowing skin.
