Skin From Within is Kim's naturopathic skin health service at Facial Impressions, Avalon Beach. It explores the internal health factors behind recurring skin concerns — including hormonal function, digestive health, inflammation patterns and nutritional status — to support your in-clinic treatments and help results hold.
Something is driving your skin.
Let's find out what.
When you're doing the right things — consistent skincare, regular professional treatments, genuine attention to your health — and the skin concern keeps returning, it's often a signal that something internal needs attention.
When the skin keeps returning to the same concern
There is a pattern that presents regularly in clinic. A client who is consistent with their skincare, attends professional treatments, and takes genuine care of their health — yet the skin concern persists or returns. Acne that clears, then comes back. Redness that settles, then flares. Sensitivity that improves in clinic but continues in daily life.
In these situations, the skin is often responding to something internal — a factor that topical treatment cannot reach on its own. This is where naturopathic skin health begins.
The internal factors most commonly involved in recurring skin concerns
From a naturopathic perspective, skin that returns to the same concern is frequently responding to one — or more — of these four areas. Assessment is individual, but these are what we explore most often.
Hormonal health
Hormones regulate almost every aspect of how skin functions — from sebaceous activity and cell turnover to barrier integrity and the inflammatory response. Shifts across the menstrual cycle, post-pill transitions, PMOS (Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome), perimenopause and beyond can create skin patterns that are genuinely difficult to resolve through topical care alone.
Digestive health & the gut-skin connection
The relationship between gastrointestinal health and skin is well supported in clinical literature. An imbalanced gut microbiome, compromised intestinal permeability, or impaired digestive function can sustain systemic inflammation — which frequently expresses through the skin as reactivity, congestion or slow healing.
Chronic inflammation & nervous system load
Sustained stress, consistently disrupted sleep and an overactivated nervous system maintain a state of low-grade inflammation throughout the body. This is often why skin responds well to treatment in clinic, then continues to flare in the context of everyday life.
Nutritional status
Particular nutrient depletions have a measurable impact on skin structure, barrier function and the skin's capacity to repair. These are frequently not identified through routine blood testing — targeted assessment is what reveals what is genuinely depleted and what the skin actually needs.
Assessment first, then a plan built for you
Kim's role as a naturopath is to determine which internal factors are relevant for each individual — and to create a plan that supports the body's own capacity to regulate and repair, so in-clinic treatments can work more effectively and results are maintained over time.
Nutrition & lifestyle — for your real life
A plan built around your actual food preferences, schedule and daily commitments — not a rigid or restrictive protocol. Practical, sustainable changes that the skin can genuinely respond to over time.
Nutritional & herbal medicine
Where indicated by the clinical assessment, targeted nutritional supplements or herbal medicine may be recommended. Selected specifically for your individual picture — not a general protocol applied to everyone.
Pathology review & further testing
Existing pathology can be reviewed as part of the consultation. Where standard testing hasn't provided clarity, further functional investigation may be recommended — including OMX organic acids analysis and GI-MAP stool testing.
Identifying & reducing your triggers
A clear understanding of what perpetuates your skin's recurring pattern — and a practical strategy for building resilience, so your skin becomes more stable and less reactive over time.
Naturopathic skin health works alongside your in-clinic treatments — not as a replacement for them. The aim is to address the internal conditions that allow your treatments to work more effectively, and for the results to hold.

Skin therapist and naturopath — in the same clinic
Most clients see a naturopath in one place and a skin therapist somewhere else. At Facial Impressions, both conversations happen under the same roof.
Your in-clinic treatments address the skin directly. Naturopathic support addresses what the skin is responding to from within. Together, you have the most complete picture of your skin health available in one place.
Results that are supported from both directions are more likely to be maintained — and less likely to return.
